I always use a pocket protector on my lab coat. Sharpies can explode!! It's as much a part of laboratory bling as a HUGE capacity USB stick around your neck, or a sweet iTouch for rocking out in the tissue culture room, or a nice green coloured laser pointer, or a personal copy of Sambrook & Maniatis. Check out the interesting history of the invention of the pocket protector on Boingboing. Is there any cool laboratory bling that I forgot to mention?
I never realized the value of double ended sharpies until I left an institute which stocked them for free. I would also count a P2 as bling if you have your own (which I suggest keeping in your lab coat before the influx of new summer students shows up-if you want to keep it intact-haha)
The bayblab is a collection of gradstudent ramblings from a cancer lab in Ottawa, Canada.
Reviews of the podcast:
"The bayblab is so much better [than Science Friday]. It even has Stephen Hawking. All Ira Flatow can claim is that he’s interrupted people who are talking about Stephen Hawking."-Ben F.
"Penises, drugs, food and my music! What more could you ask for?"-KevinZ.
"Smart and snarky, the Bayblab team discuss science oddities, engaging in lively banter in the comments section that is an intellectual's playground." - Lim Leng Hiong
"Interesting news in science at slightly above the popscience level. Informal and funny."-Rumply
"When I happen to read a post, and it can be any post on this site, it is categorically thought inspiring"- Anders Rasmussen
"it's like butter melting over my pancakes good. I especially enjoyed the information on saving my genitals from a zipper accident."-Redge

My favourite lab bling: my prescription lab safety glasses.
The heavily stained lab coat seems to be a popular one.
I can't believe you forgot to mention the solar-powered calculator...

Pens! Courtesy of some pharmaceutical company.
