Support our Troops: Learn Biochemistry

Consider the following two organic compounds:
A prize the first to correctly answer any of the following questions:
  • What are the common names of these chemicals?
  • How do they differ a) chemically, b) in biological effect?
  • How would you synthesize these molecules, and where/how would you obtain the raw materials for their production?

yeah, it's morphine and heroin. Heroin is hella more potent than morphine because it's more nonpolar than morphine and it crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily. You could get the raw ingredients from, I don't know, poppyseeds?
